About Sympatico Netlife
Launched in September 1996, Sympatico NetLife is Canada's first and only complete consumer guide to the Internet. SNL helps connect Canada's Net-using families to great online content and the information that matters most to them. As a comprehensive, user-friendly resource, the magazine acts as a print companion to Sympatico's online service, helping subscribers to get the most of their time spent on the Net. The editorial includes a lively mix of Web site reviews, how-to articles, expert advice, helpful columns, comprehensive features, news, product reviews and lively commentary.
Sympatico NetLife is published six times a year: Jan/Feb, Mar/April, May/June, July/Aug, Sept/Oct, Nov/Dec. The magazine has a current circulation of more than 350,000, and is distributed across Canada to Sympatico members, as well as on newsstand and by subscription.
Content
While the majority of the magazine's content is written by regular columnists, two sections are open to freelancers: NetBytes and feature articles.
NetBytes: Lengths vary from 75-300 words. Subject matter includes news, trends, issues, hot products, services, personalities and opinions related to the Internet.
Features: Lengths vary from 1,500-2,500 words. The features tackle subjects that relate to our readers' everyday lives and concerns, ranging from arranging family vacations to shopping online, to how to better use e-mail software.
Queries
Story queries should be submitted via e-mail to the editor. Your query should include a brief outline of your story idea, why you feel it is appropriate for Sympatico NetLife, and the expected length. If you have not written for the magazine previously, please include samples of your published work and some background information, including your telephone number and e-mail address.
We work on an issue approximately three months in advance, so our lead times are very long. Once a story is assigned any changes to the story line, or other major changes/problems should be discussed with the handling editor well before deadline. A complete list of sources and their daytime telephone numbers must accompany the first draft to facilitate fact-checking. Let your sources know that someone will be calling them to verify information. Copies of any printed material used in your research and contact numbers should be e-mailed or faxed to handling editor.
Rights and Kill Fees
All work for Telemedia must be produced under signed contract. If an assigned article is deemed unacceptable or unsuitable for publication, the author will be payed a kill fee, which is usually 50 percent of the original fee.
Payment
Full payment will be made on acceptance of a satisfactory manuscript. Please include an invoice with your name, SIN number, story name, and issue clearly indicated. Include your GST number if qualified. Payment is up to $1.10 per word, as per the contracted length of the piece.
